On a brisk Saturday afternoon on June 26th, a hardy group of inc3 volunteers made their presence felt in the streets of Kensington, where they spent the day doorknocking as part of the nation-wide campaign to replace Hazelwood power station with clean energy. While the weather may have been rather on the chilly side, the response that the inc3 team received from local residents was truly warming.
Hundreds of people were more than happy to sign on to the replace Hazelwood petition, with many more interested in taking further actions as part of the campaign.
Volunteers found that after Kevin Rudd’s now infamous ‘back-flip’ on climate change, a new PM at the helm, and an election looming, the vast bulk of people approached simply want to see some real action on climate change, and view replacing Hazelwood – Australia’s dirtiest coal-fired power station – as the logical place to start. People were also surprised – and excited – to learn that merely by replacing Hazelwood, we could reduce our entire nation’s greenhouse pollution by 3%. “People were incredibly supportive”, one volunteer reported. “Whether young, old, male or female, it seemed like every one wants to replace Hazelwood!”
inc3 is proud to be part of the Replace Hazelwood campaign, which involves a number of different groups, and has recently been gathering great momentum, as witnessed recently with Labor MP Kelvin Thomson publicly supporting putting Hazelwood out to pasture.
Door knocking has been an integral part of the Replace Hazelwood campaign, and is a fun and powerful way of building community support for this important measure. inc3 will be knocking again on Saturday the 17th of July, so please sign up to our mailing list to receive details and come along, because the more volunteers we have, the more houses we can reach, and the sooner we can replace Hazelwood! |
