The Carbon Price: A Summary |
|
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step…
Let’s be clear, the carbon price policy is not science-based or visionary and won’t achieve that much. However, it can genuinely be described as a small step in the right direction. If Australia is to do its bit towards achieving a safe climate future – a lot more needs to happen. Our hard work campaigning has gotten us this far, but now is not the time to be resting on our laurels.
Written below is not an exhaustive list of what the carbon price policies entail, rather a summary of the most important points as we see them.

Stop HRL - No new coal power for Victoria! |
|
To effectively tackle climate change, we urgently need to move away from coal – especially in Victoria, where our reliance on coal for power generation results in our per-capita greenhouse emissions being near the highest in the world. But now there are plans to build a new coal-fired power plant in Victoria! We have to say NO to this project; find out how to join the campaign to STOP HRL below, or by signing up for updates at www.stophrl.org

Two hours toward a safe climate? |
|
inc3 is proud to be one of several community climate action groups taking part in the Vote Climate campaign leading up to the Victorian state elections. We've been out enjoying the spring weather, distributing Vote Climate and T10 "100% renewable energy is possible by 2020" fliers to letterboxes in Kensington, Flemington, North Melbourne, West Melbourne, Carton, Parkville and Princes Hill. Our print run of 20,000 vote climate fliers has now been exhausted - mission accomplished!
Thanks sincerely to everyone who volunteered their time making a safe climate for future generations a real issue this state election.

Our Premier John Brumby has been making some welcome announcements on climate change of late. Many of us have viewed the resulting positive press with some relief and hope but also with understandable scepticism given Mr Brumby's past advocacy in support of brown coal electricity producers - not to mention the whole brown coal export fiasco. For a nice summary have a look at this article by Taegan Edwards. More recently, there are new indications that the government is incapable of resisting brown coal dollars...
The proposed HRL coal-gas power station is a real indication of whether the plan to cut Victoria's emissions by 20% from 2000 levels by 2020 has any substance behind it. Read on to compare the Premier's press spin to an open letter from environmental organisations pointing out the painfully obvious.

The Victorian Government has declared the Westlink freeway (tunnel) its "number one priority project" for federal funding. Even Brumby's own figures show benefits of barely a third of the predicted $5.3 billion dollar project cost!

Doorknocking to replace Hazelwood! |
|
On a brisk Saturday afternoon on June 26th, a hardy group of inc3 volunteers made their presence felt in the streets of Kensington, where they spent the day doorknocking as part of the nation-wide campaign to replace Hazelwood power station with clean energy. While the weather may have been rather on the chilly side, the response that the inc3 team received from local residents was truly warming.
Hundreds of people were more than happy to sign on to the replace Hazelwood petition, with many more interested in taking further actions as part of the campaign.
